VanBrewers will be holding the monthly meeting on Thursday, March 28 at the usual meeting place (2205 Commercial Drive, upstairs from the Legion) at 7pm.
Prospective and seasoned members alike will get to learn how to make real ale at home...a good thing seeing as the pins and supplies for cask beer have been ordered!
If you would like to have your beer assessed by one of our BJCP judges, please bring in a bottle with no marks or labels.
Don't forget to bring a little homebrew to share, and remember your glass!
The next club meeting is Thursday, February 28th at 7PM sharp!
We are going to be starting a new format for 2013 meetings with the first half consisting of presentations on a given topic. This month, its all about competitions.
Matt Anderson will kick things off with a presentation on what you need to know about entering your beer into a homebrew competition.
Following Matt's presentation will be Danny Seeton who will present on what a beer competition is like from a Judge's perspective.
David O'Halloran will also have his new stir plate idea on display made from locally sourced components.
As always members of the public interested in home brewing are welcome to attend and learn more about our club.
Please remember to bring a taster glass with you to the meeting. Plastic cups will be available for $1 each.
Location:
2205 Commercial Drive, Vancouver, BC (upstairs)
The AGM is coming up on February 2nd. The perfect time go see what we do, meet the members and join! AGM starts at 12:30 sharp. Membership signup and renewal will happen between 11:30 and noon. Cost is $20 to sign up. Only current members will be allowed at the AGM. It will be held at Parallel 49's new warehouse located at 1993 Pandora Street, Vancouver. Enter through the back alley. A sign will be posted.
Once the AGM is wrapped up, we will have our annual winterfest and fundraiser. This will be from 2 to 6pm. Suggested donation of $10 to attend. Any members that bring a keg or enough bottles to share with everyone will be given a raffle ticket and prizes will be awarded. Since the space is being donated, be respectful and clean up after yourself.
Congratulations to Jeff Hay-Roe of Gibsons, BC for his winning entry in the Howe Sound, Alibi Room and VanBrewers Pro/Am competition. There were many entries submitted but Jeff's Southern English Brown Ale beat out the rest to win the Best of Show Round. Jeff will be able to brew his beer with Howe Sound Brewing and see commercial release starting at the Alibi Room's 400th tap rotation celebration. Thanks to all the brewers who entered their beers.
As you all should be aware (I did tell you months ago to brew for these styles!), Vanbrewers and the BC Beer Awards are hosting a public competition for Harvest and Oktoberfest style beers. Think fresh hops, pumpkin, festbiere, etc. Judging will be per BJCP Style Guidlines, but the Best of Show round will focus only on Harvest/Oktoberfest styles. First place will be brewing their beer with Nigel and Conrad over at soon-to-be Brassneck Brewing. That beer will then be available for the 2013 BC Beer Awards. Pretty sweet, right!
Drop off for this FREE competition is going to be at the September meeting (the 27th), or at Matt's house after that. Bottles must be free of markings and labels, caps unmarked or blacked out, and a BJCP Bottle ID tag attached. The cut-off date is October 5. We will not be accepting entries after this date.
If you have any further questions, contact Scott. Cheers!
Since we had Summertime Brews in August already, the executive has decided to cancel the regular monthly on the last Thursday of the month.
Instead, we'd like to hold a sponsor appreciation night for the great people at Steamworks. We'd like to see a lot of you come out for this. Again, this is our way of thanking them for supporting us during our Vanbrewer Awards, and throughout the rest of the year as well (I'm looking at you folk who have free yeast and wort!)
Let us know your intentions on here, and I'll arrange a reservation again as best as I can. Obviously, no home brew is permitted at a licensed establishment.
Cheers!
Summertime Brews is the Vanbrewers summer fundraising event. Guests are encouraged to bring kegs or bottles of beer to share (and equipment to share said kegged beer). Your generosity will garner you free entry to the event. Our door person will use their discretion when charging. For example, if you bring one keg YOU get in for free. If you bring two kegs, YOU still get in for free, but only you. This is a fundraiser for our club, after all.
We'll be smoking 50 pounds of meat for pulled pork sandwiches, and beef/veggie burgers will be grilled up, so if you require something else (vegetarians and vegans..that's you!) please contact Scott via treasurer@vanbrewers.ca. We'll have some veggie burgers available, so if you need something other than this please bring it. Do feel free to bring a side dish to share should you feel so inclined.
As always, signing up for membership will be possible during the day.
